Plants with trailing or climbing stems, herbaceous or woody below, arising from a large, undergraound tuber; tendrils usually present, forked. Leaves simple, bilobed. Inflorescences lateral racemes. Flowers medium-sized, bisexual, heterostylous, yellow; sepals 5, upper 2 partly or wholly united, others free; petals 5, upper petals smaller than the rest; stamens 2 fertile, (7-)8 staminodial; styles elongate, stigmas small. Pods stipitate, woody, dehsicent or indehiscent, with 2 seeds; seeds large, each with a short, U-shaped hilum.
Tylosema is a genus of 5 species. Two of which grow in Somaliland and Somalia.
