Plants annual or perennial. Inflorescences terminal, usually solitary, rarely paired, bearing inclined or pectinate spikelets racemosely distributed along a central axis. Spikelets subterete to subcylindrical. each with 1 floret, without rachilla extensions or with 2 well-developed florets, upper florets male; glumes subequal, enclosing the florets; lemmas shorter than the glumes, keeled, thinly membranous, acute to bilobed, sometimes mucronulate. Caryopses ellipsoid.
Microchloa includes 6 species. They grow in tropical regions throughout the world. Two species grow in Somaliand and Somalia.
