Plants herbs or small shrubs. Leaves entire or with somewhat crenate margins. Inflorescences axially cymes or of solitary flowers; bracts shorter than the calyces. Calyces tubular, 5-lobed, 2-lipped but often not distinctly so; corollas 5-lipped, indistinctly to fairly distinctly 2-lipped, tubes cylindrical, widened in the upper part; stamens 4, in 2 pairs, filaments of the the members of each pair fused near the base; anthers 2-celled, each theca shrtly spurred at the base; styles pubescent; stigmas usually a single, linear lobe. Capsules cylindrical, 4-seeded; seeds rounded, flat, densely pubescent.
Dyschoriste includes about 65 species. They are native in tropical and subtropical regions throughout the world.
