Plants perennial herbs, subshrubs, or shrubs, usually conspicuously gland-dotted. Leaves entire or lobed; stipules minute to large and leaflike. Inflorescences axillary, of solitary flowers or 2-flowered cymes. Epicalyces present, of (3-)9-12 bracts, minute and subulate to prominent and equaling the calyces; calyces 5-lobed or splitting into 2 lobes, with dark glands along the veins; petals glandular-punctate, pubescent outside; ovaries 3(-5)-celled, each cell with 3-many ovules; styles sometimes divided apically. Fruits punctate loculicidal capsules; seeds densely hairy.
Cienfuegosia is a genus of about 27 species. They are native from Africa to Arabia and Madagascar and from South America to the southern U.S.A. One species, Cuenfuegosa welshii, is known from both Somaliland and Somalia.
