Plants herbs. Leaves opposite below, alternate above. Inflorescences terminal racemes. Calyces deeply divided into 5 equal or subequal lobes; corollas with a straight spur; corolla limbs 2-lipped, the lower lip not forming a palate that closes the mouth of the tube; stamens 4, included, adjacent pairs of anthers marginally coherent; ovaries superior, 2-celled; styles filiform; stigmas capitate. Fruits capsules, often with unequal cells, the larger cell dehiscing before the smaller, first by a circumscissile split then by irregular teeth or valves, the small dehiscing by a solitary pore or indehiscent.
Chaenorhinum is a genus of 21 species which grow mainly in southwestern Europe, northern Africa, and southwestern Asia.
Only one species of Chaenorhinum is known from Somaliland, Chaenorhinum rubrifolium. None are known from Somalia.
