Plants herbs or small shrubs; stems erect or ascending, frequently 4-angled. Leaves opposite or the upper leaves alternate, margins entire or deeply incised. Inflorescences usually in axillary cymes, rarely solitary, forming terminal panicles or racemes. Flowers 5-merous; calyces deeply 5-lobed, the lobes usually obtuse with scarious margins; corollas 2-lipped, with short tubes, appearing more or less globose before the lobes extend; limbs with 2-lobed upper lips and 3-lobed lower lips; stamens 4 fertile, usually a scale-like staminode also present; filaments of fertile stamens varying from 2 long and 2 short to almost equal. ovaries 2-celled; styles filiform. Fruits septicidal capsules, ovoid to subglobose; seeds numerous, ovoid, rugose.
Scrophularia includes about 120 species. It is best represented in northern temperate regions.
Only one species of Scrophularia is known from Somaliland and Somalia, Scrophularia arguta.
