Plants annual to perennial herbs; rhizomes present or absent; stems usually present. Leaves stipulate, petiolate, sometimes winged; stipules lanceolate-ovate, entire, dentate, or fimbriate; blades ovate-triangular or reniform, cordate, serrate, crenate. Flowers bilaterally symmetric; peduncles bracteolate, bracteoles 2, opposite or subopposite; sepals 5, persistent; petals 5, lowest larger than the others and spurred; filaments short, wide, distinct, filaments of the lateral stamens extendinginto the spur; anthers connate, encircling the ovaries; stigmas lobed, straight or beaked. Fruits 3-valved capsules, dehiscing loculidally; seeds rounded-vae, smooth, shiny.
Viola is a cosmopolitan genus. There are 18 species known in Pakistan, including one cultivated species. It grows mostly in the northern and alpine areas of Pakistan, but a few are confined to the lower hills and plains. One species,Viola indica is currently known only records in GBIF, one from the Chitral regionm the other from Nathia Gali.
