Leaves scale-like, with salt-secreting glands. Inflorescences panicles of racemelike or spikelike branches. Petals without scalelike appendages.
Tamarix includes about 75 species. It is most common in the Mediterranean region and Central Asia but its range extends to southern Africa, India, China, and Japan. One species, Tamarix nilotica grows in both Somaliland and Somalia. Somalia also has another species, Tamarix aphylla.
