Plants trees or shrubs, monoecious or dioecious, usually with stellate hairs. Leaves entire, lobed, or palmately divided. Inflorescences panicles or racemes, unisexual. Calyces 4-5(-6) lobed; petals absent. Male flowers with 10-20 stamens in a capitate cluster on a slender androphore. Female flowers: ovaries of 4-5 coherent carpels surrounded by staminodes, often on a gynophore; carpels with 2-many ovules; styles coherent with peltate or 4-5-lobed stigmas. Carpels separating a maturity and becoming woody or leathery follicles, often with irritating hairs inside; seeds often with basal arils.
Sterculia has about 100 species. They grow in tropical and subtropical regions throughout the world. There are 3 species of Sterculia in Somaliland and Somalia.
