Plants herbs or shrubs with branched hairs. Inflorescences thyrselike, open or dense; bracts large and leaflike; cymes with 1-10 flowers; bracteoles present. CAlyces 5-lobed, with with 5-10 more or less distinct ribs; lobes subequal or the 3 upper slightly different from the 2 lower; corollas 2-lipped; upper lips straight, slightly hooded, entire or emarginate, hairy but not bearded along the margins; lower lips 3-lobed, middle lobes the largest, deflexed, markedly longer than the upper lips; stamens directed to the upper corolla lips, style branches equally long. Nutlets rounded at the top, glabrous.
Stachys is a cosmopolitan genus of about 360 species. Two species are known from Somaliland and Somalia.
