Plants herbs ir softly woody small shrubs or trees. Leaves even-pinnate, Inflorescences axillary racemes. Calyces truncate to shortly 5-lobed, margins sparsely woody; corollas glabrous, usually yellow, banner petals nearly always streaked and spotted with purple, their claws with 2, variously shaped, appendages; vexillary stamens free. Pods long, dehiscent, beaked; seeds 8-50.
Sesbania includes about 50 species. They are native in the tropics and subtropics growing in wet, or at least seasonally wet, places. More than 30 species are native to Africa, 8 to Somaliland and Somalia.
