Plants trees or shrubs, armed with stipular thorns or unarmed. Leaves bipinnate, rarely reduced or absent. Inflorescences spikes, spikelike racemes, or heads. Calyx 5-lobed. Petals 5, free or united below. Stamens 10; anthers with an often inconspicuous apical gland. Pods straight, curved, or spirally coiled, woody or coriaceous, subcylindrical to more or less compressed, indehiscent, septate between the seeds.
Prosopis includes 44 species. Most are American but one is native to tropical Africa and three others to the Middle East.
