Plants annual or pereenial herbs, if perennial, usually with a distinct caudex. Leaves subsucculent, petiolate; blades entire or coarsely dentate, particularly in the distal half. Inflorescences of solitary flowers, axillary. Corollas: tubes tubular to narrowly funnel-shaped; lobes subequal; anthers with divergent thecae. Fruits subpyramidal, abruptly contracted into an obconical base, distal portion 4-angled, with a spreading spine at the base of each angle, faces rugose or tuberculate; seeds 2-4, oblong.
Pedalium includes a single, variable species. It is native in tropical East and West Africa, Socotra, Madagascar, Comores, India, Sri Lanka, and Java., Pedalium murex.
