Plants shrubs or small trees. Leaves usually opposite, occasionally in whorls of 3; stipules united at least at the base, apiculareblades usually with bacterial nodules visible as blackish dots. Inflorescences of few- to many-flowered corymbose inflorescences or of solitary flowers; Flowers 4-merous; calyx lobes short to long, occasionally absent; corollas usually white to cream of greenish white; tubes cylindrical to narrowly funnel-shaped; lobes contorted to the left in bud; anthers exserted; ovaries 2-celled, with 1 or 2 pendulous ovules per cell; styles exserted, the pollen presenters club-shaped with a 2-lobed stigma at the tip. Fruits globose drupes, with 1 or 2 stones.
Pavetta is a genus of about 400 species, all native to the Old World tropics.
