Plants usually shrubs or trees, rarely herbs; monoecious; latex produded when cut. Leaves alternate, sometimes peltate, often palmately lobed. Inflorescences terminal to subterminal-axillary racemes with 1-few long pedicellate female flowers belw several short pedicellate male flowers. Male flowers: calyces campanulate or tubular, lobes 5. imbricate or contorted; petals absent; stamens 10, free, alternating with lobes of disc or glands; pistillodes small or absent. Female flowers: similar but staminodes absent; ovaries 3-celled; ovules solitary; styles variously dilated or lobed. Fruits capsules; seeds with caruncles.
Manihot is an American genus of about 160 species. The root tubers of some species are very important as a staple food crop in many areas of the tropics; other species are grown as sources of rubber. Both kinds have been grown in Somaliland and Somalia.
