Plants herbs or softly woodyshrublets. Leaves stipulate, odd-pinnate, with (3-)5 leaflets; stipules minute;lowest pair of leaflets on each leaf resembling stipules. Inflorescences pedunculate heads or umbels, rarely of solitary flowers. Calyces usually subequally 5-toothed, rarely 2-lipped; stamens 10, uppermost stamen in each flower free, others united by their filaments. Pods straight, usually cylindrical, dehiscent, with many seeds.
Lotus includes about 125 species. They are most numerous around the Mediterranean. There are 2 species in Somaliland, one of which also grows in Somalia.
