Plants perennial herbs or small shrubs. Leaves entire. Inflorescences solitary flowers, heads, or spikelike. Calyces unequally 5-lobed or 4-lobed with lower lobes 2-fid, lateral lobes smal, narrowly lanceolate to linear, upper and lower lobes larger than the lateral lobes; corollas 2-lipped lower lipes 3-lobed, upper lips 2-lobed; corolla tubes cylindrical on lower portion, widening distally; stamens 4, the lower 2 with 2-celled anthers the upper 2 with 1- or 2-celled anthers. Capsules with 2-4 seeds; seeds with hygroscopic hairs.
Lepidagathis includes about 100 species that are native to tropical and warm temperate regions. There are 4 species in Somalia, 2 of which also grow in Somaliland.
