Plants perennial herbs, schrubs, or small trees, unarmed or with prickles, usually with stellate hairs. Leaves ovate to elliptic, entire to more or less deeply lobed. Inflorescences with few flowers, only the basal 1-3 flowers bisexual, the rest staminate. Corollas violet, blueish violet or white witha pale violet tinge, stellate or 5-angulare. Fruits yellow, white, or purple, fleshy throughout at maturity, sometimes with a tough or leathery wall.
