Plants subshrubs or perennial herbs, armed with straight or recurved prickles, younger parts with stellate hairs. Leaves entire to sinuate. Corollas blue-violet, rotare or rotate-stellate; stamens unequal, one filament longer than the rest. Fruits yellow, dry, sometimes enclosed in enlarged, prickly calyx. Seeds black.
