Plants shrubs or trees, with stellate hairs, these often intermxied with simple and glandular hairs. leaves simple, often lobed, palmately veined. Inflorescences axillary cymes. Flowers bisexual; sepals 5, united below into a short tube; petals 5, white to pink, persistent and papery in fruit; stamens in 5 groups of 2-3, alternating with linear staminodes, all united below into a short tube; ovaries 3-5-celled, each cell with 2-8 ovules; styles 3-5-lobed. Fruits poricidal capsules.
Dombeya includes about 200 species. Most are native to Madagascar but several are also found in Africa and Yemen.
