Plants herbs, subshrubs, or shrubs. Flowers in axiallary cymes, usually paired between a pair of appressed bracts, generally resupinate. Calyces 5-lobed, the lobes unequal; corollas 2-lipped, lower lips 3-lobed (but turned upside down), upper lips entire or emarginate; stamens 2, exserted; anthers 2-celled, one cell above the other; ovaries with 2 ovules in each cell; styles exserted; stigmas 2-lobed. Capsules ovoid, usually 4-seeded, placentas elastic in fruit; seeds flattened, finely tuberculate.
Dicliptera includes about 150 species. They are native in the tropics and subtopics of both the Old and New Worlds.
