Plants free-standing trees, scandents shrubs, or woody lianas, sometimes with branches modified as thorns or climbing aids. Leaves odd-pinnate; leaflets usually alternate. Inflorescences usually panicles or, less frequently, in racemes. Calyces shortly 5-toothed, the lowest tooth usually the narrower and longer than the lother, the upper pair usually broader than the others and often more united; corollas small, usually white and fragrant; wing petals free; stamens 9 or 10; filaments usually all united into a tube; anthers basifixed with apical dehiscence. Pods indehiscent, resembling a winged seed; seeds 1-few, reniform.
Dalbergia includes about 280 species. It is grows in tropical regions around the world. One species, Dalbergia commiphoroides, is known from Somaliand and Somalia, 3 more are known only from Somalia.
