Plants lianas or scrabbling subshrubs; latex white, Leaves opposite, petiolate. Inflorescences terminal cynes. Corollas campanulate to funnel-shaped, more or less deeply lobed; gynostegia concealed within the corolla tubes; corona lobes inserted in the corolla tubes, entire or 2-fid, filiform, covering the staminal con, glabrous; stamens inserted at base of the corolla tubes; pollen in tetrads; stigmatic heads conical-pentagonal. Follicles paired, widely divergent, thick-walled; seeds with a tuft of hairs at one end.
Cryptostegia includes only two species. Both are native to Madagascar but often cultivated throughout the tropics. Neither is known to be cultivated in Somaliland. Cryptostegia madagascariensis is known to have been cultivated, at least in the past, in Somalia.
