Plants annual or perennial herbs or shrublets, with simple or stellate hairs. Leaves stipulate; stipules subulate to triangular; blades simple, not lobed; margins crenate, dentate, or serrate. Inflorescences leaf-opposed, of solitary flowers or clusters of flowers. Sepals 4-5, elliptic, with ciliolate bases and hooded tips; petals as long as the sepals or slightly shorter, yellow, linear to obovate, usually with ciliate claws;stamens 5-many; ovaries 2-5 celled with 3-many ovules per cell; styles simple; stigmas lobed or cup-shaped. Capsules cylindrical to ellipsoid or globose, glabrous, hairy, bristly; seeds grey or brown, quadrangular, ellipsoid, or cylindrical.
Corchorus includes about 75 species and is found in tropical and subtropical regions throughout the world. The fibres of some species are used commercially in some parts of Asia.
