Plants trees or shrubs. Leaves petiolate, simple, often with unequal-sided blades, margins entire or serrate distally, often scabrous because of the presence of systoliths. Inflorescences cymes or clusters, female or bisexual flowers with longer pedicels, few to many, usually in the uppermost inflorescences. Sepals (4-)5, free, imbricate; stamens as many as the sepals; ovaries sessile, 1-celled, with 1-2 simple styles. Fruits drupes with hard endocarps.
Celtis includes about 60 species. It is widespread in the tropics and northern temperate regions.
