Plants shrubs or small trees, often with branched hairs; Leaves usually opposite; stipules leafy or reduced to a line. Inflorescences terminal or axillary panicles, these sometimes raceme-like. Flowers 4-merous; calyces campanulate, lobes subequal; corollas variously colored; lobes 4, imbricate; stamens 4, attached to the corollas; anthers with 2 thecae, thecae not confluent; ovaries 2-celled, each cell with many ovules; stigmas capitate or slightly bilobed. Fruits usually capsules with septicidal dehiscence, sometimes berries.
Buddleja includes about 90 species which grow in tropical regions around the world.
