Plants evergreen trees. Leaves evenly pinately compound; leaflets coarsely serrata. Flowers bisexual or staminate, both on the same individual; calyces 5-lobed, lobes about half as long as the calyc, imbricate; staminal tubes cylindrical, slightly expanded at the mouth, terminattin in 10 rounded, truncate, emarginate, or bilobed appendages, these sometimes partly united; discs annualar, fused to the base of the ovaries; ovaries 3-celled, each cell with 2 ovules; styles 1, terminating in 3 acute, partly fused, stigmatic lobes. Fruits 1(-2) seeded drupes with a thin, cartilaginous endocarp.
Azadirachta includes 2 species, both of which as native to the Indo-Malesian region. One species, Azadirachta indica, has been planted in many drier tropical regions.
