Plants suffrutescent, rhizomatous perennials up to 2(-3.6) m tall and 1.8 m across; stems woddy at the base, profusely branched above. Leaves 2-10 cm long, 2-4 mm wide, flat. Inflorescences usually of salitary, rarely paired, rames, 2-3 cm long, terminal on short, leafy branches and long-exserted on filiform peduncles; internodes and pedicels filiform, villous. Sessile spikelets 5-6.5 mm long (including the 0.5 mm calluses; lower glumes linear-lanceolate, thinly cartilaginiys, shallowly depressed between the thickened lateral keels, without veins between keels, acute; upper glumes mucronate; upper lemmas bifid in the distal 1/4, with an awn 10-25 mm long. Pedicellate spikelets 6-7 mm long; lower glumes narrowly lanceolate, both lower and upper glumes with a mucro up to 1 mm,
Andropogon kelleri grows in bushland n silty or sandy depressions overlying limestone or gypsum at 180-1520 m. It is known from regions N1-3, C1,-2, and S1 of the regions in the Flora of Somalia. It is also known from Ethiopia.
