Plants shrubs or subshrubs, 10-180 cm tall; young stems green, glabrousto fairly densely pubescent with erect hairs 0.1-0.5 mm long, gradually becoming greyish with bark peelingin long stripes. Leaves simple, petiolate; petioles 0.5-5 mm long; blades 13-58 mm long, 3-27 mm wide, narrowly lanceolate to ovate or narrowly elilliptic to elliptic or obovate, glabrous to fairly densely pubescent with somewhat antrorse to erect hairs 0.1-0.2 mm long, bases shortly attenutate to attenuate, tips emarginate to acuminate. Inflorescences of solitary or few-flowered clusters at the upper nodes; bracts leaflike, 3.8-14 mm long, 1-7 mm wide; bracteoles inconspicuous, 0.8-1.5 mm long, 0.2-0.3 mm wide. Flowers: calyx lobes 5, narrowly triangular, 3.3-7.7 mm long in flower, becoming 4-9.5 mm long and 0.6-1.1 mm wide in fruit, with or without narrow hyaline margins, sparsely to usually densely pubescent with somewhat antrose to erect hairs about 0.4 mm long; corollas yellow, often with red venation, 2-lipped 6.2-14.2 mm long, tubes 2.8-6.4 mm long, lower lips 3.8-11.3 mm long, about 15.3 mm wide, evidently 3-lobed, upper lips 3.7-9 mm long, inconspicuously 2-lobed; anthers 1.5-2.5 mm long, their thecae separated by 0.4-0.7 mm long, lower thecae with tails 0.4-0.8 mm long. Capsules 10.6-14.9 mm long, 3.5- 4-.9 mm wide, glabrous to densely pubescent with erect to somewhat retrorse hairs 0.1-0.5 mm long, lower 2/5th sterile; seeds 2.8-3.2 mm long, 2.7-3.2 m wide, tuberculate.
Justicia odora grows in deciduous bushalnd, usually on sandy or stony ground, at 50-1650 m. It is known from all regions of Somaliland and Somalia; Djibouti, Eritrea, and Ethiopia and is also widespread in tropical Africa and tropical Arabia. It is extremely variable in northeast tropical Africa with respect to size, leaf shape, and corolla size but the variation appears to be coninuous.
