Plants slender shrubs or subshrubs. Leaves alternate, shortly petiolate, entire. Inflorescences dense, elongate spikes or cluster of spikes, each flower subtended by a small bract. Flowers small, bisexual, more or less bilaterally symmetric; calyces cylindric, with 5 narrow, subulate teeth, long-hairy, particularly on the tube; corollas tubular, tubes hairy inside and out; corolla limbs short, 5-lobed; stamens 4, slightly exserted; anthers of 2 united thecae, slightly constricted at midlength; ovaries superior, 1-celled, with a single pendulous 1 ovule; styles filiform, terminal; stigmas shortly 2-lobed. Fruits a single small nut, thin-walled, ellipsoid.
Poskea includes only 2 species, both of which grow in the Horn of Africa. Poskea socotrana also grows in Socotra and Yemen. The genus is included in the Globulariaceae in the Flora of Somalia, but is now included in the Plantaginaceae.
