Plants shrubs or trees. Leaves opposite;stioules triangular a base. Inflorescences umbellate or of solitary flowers, bracts paired, persistent, entirely surrounding the inflorescenes in bud. Flowers unisexual or bisexual, 4-5-merous; calyces with lobes reduced to a rim, teeth or short lobes; corolla tubesdensely hairy at the throat, lobes sometimes shortly apiculate, valvate in bud; ovaries 2-celled (in Somaliland and Somalia), ovules 1 per ell, pendulous; styles with pollen presenters about as long as wide. Fruits fleshy. lobed.
Pyrostria is a genus of about 45 species which are native in Africa, Madagascar, the Mascarens, and Saudi Arabia. There are also some species in Malesia and Indochina that might belong to it.
