Plants shrubs or small trees, rarely sscandent, rarely spiny, often with bud scales. Leaves alternate, spiral or distichous, usually simple, rarely lobed or pinnate. Flowers bisexual; petals usually pendant; staminal tubes as conspicous as the petals, erct, somtimes curved; style heads often presenting pollen. Fruits leathery capsules, dehiscing longitudinally by 5-10 valves to expose several slightly reniform, glossy, arillate seeds. Embryos with prominently exserted radicles; endosperm filling about hald the seed.
Turraea is an Old World tropical genus with about 80 species. It is most speciose in Madagascar and Africa; there are few species in Southeast Asia.
