Plants trees or shrubs, unarmed Plants trees or shrubs, unarmed, usually dioecious. Leaves usually evergree, alternate or opposite, simple or digitately compound with 1-3(-12) leaflets, with conspicous glandular dots. Inflorescences terminal and/or axillary panicles, racemes or clusters. Flowers 2-4(-5) merous; sepals united to form a cup-shaped calyx; petals oblong. Male flowers with 4-8(-10) stamens inserted at the base of the nectary disc;pistillodes present. Female flowers without staminodes or with up to 8 staminodes; ovaries 1-2(-4) celled, each cell with 1-2 ovules; stigmas sessile, capitate or peltate. Fruits 1-2(-4)-celled drupes, usually with 1-seeded cells.
Vepris includes about 60 species with are native to tropical Africa and Madagascar, with 1 species extending to Arabia and another in southern India.
