Plants annual herbs. Leaves alternate. Capitula heterogamous; outer flowers neuter, radiate inner flowers bisexual. Styles with a hairy ring below the puberulent, flattened arms. Achenes many-ribbed, rugulose between the ribs, with an apical rim; pappuses of linear to lanceolate scales, persistent.
Volutaria includes about 16 species. Its range extends from southern Europe to northern and eastern Africa and southwest Asia. Two species are known from Somaliland, none from Somalia. One species, Volutaria tubiflora, is has become an invasive weed in desert areas of California. It is native to northern Africa and the Mediterranean Basin.
