Plants perennial grasses. Leaves: ligules a line of hairs; blades rigid, inrolled, tapering to sharp points. Inflorescences spikelike panicles, cylindrical, exserted from the uppermost leaf sheaths. Spikelets with 1 floret, without rachilla extensions, stronaly laterally compressed and keeled; glumes narrow, almost as long as the florets, unawned; lemmas membranous, 1-veined, mucronate. Grains ellipsoid, top third surrounded by the thickened and pesistent style bases; pericarp free, swelling when wet.
Urochondra includes on one species, Urochondra setulosa. It grows in both Somaliland and Somalia.
