Plants usually perennial, rarely annual. Leaves: ligules composed of a line of hairs; blades rigid, glaucous often inrolled. Inflorescences panicles. Spikelets symmetrically obling in profiles, laterally compressed, unawned; lower glumes small or suppressed, slightly separated from the upper; uooer glumes equaling the florets, thinly membranous, slightly emarginate to acute; lower florets male, their lemmas resembling the upper glumes; upper lemmas dorsally compressed, firmly cartilaginous, smooth and shining, white, readily deciduous, the margins flat and clasping. Caryopses ovate to elliptic oblong.
Tricholaena includes 4 species. They are native to the Mediterranean region and through Africa to India. One species, Tricholaena teneriffae, is know from both Somaliland and Somalia.
