Plants gerbs wuth erect to twining stems, shrubs, or woody climbers. Leaves opposite, pinnately or palmately veined, without cystoliths. Inflorescences axillary, of solitary flowers or racemes; bracteoles 2 per flower, large, partially connate and enclosing the base of the flowers. Calyces cup-shaped, a narrow rim, or with 10-20 unequal linear lobes; corolla tubes widening in upper portion, limbs subequally 5-lobed, lobes spreading; stamens 4, included, subequal or 2 long and 2 short; anthers 2-celled, spurred or ornamented at the base; ovaries 2-celled, with 2 ovules per cell; styles usually included; stigmas funnel-shaped or unequally 2-lobed, Capsules broadly triangular and obscurely beaked to subglobose with a differentiated beaks; seeds broadly elliptic.
Thunbergia includes about 100 species. They are all native to the Old World tropics. There are three species in Somalia, one of which, Thunbergia alata, is also known from Somaliland.
