Plants shrubs or shrublets. Leaves digitatately or pinnately compounds, with 1 or 3 leaflets; leaflets usually rather thick. Inflorescences axillary racemes, these sometimes short and reduced to 1 or few flowers. Flowers:Corollas persistent in fruit; banner and keel petals longer than the wing petals; stamens 10, the uppermost stamen free, the other 9 united by their filaments. Pods flattened, breaking transversely into 1-5, indehiscent, 1-seeded segments.
Taverniera includes about 15 species. It is native in arid regions from Egypt to India. There are 4 species in Somaliland and Somalia.
