Plants shrubs or trees, rarely climbers, usually armed with straight spines representing modified inflorescence axes. Leaves opposite or subopposite; stipules linear, persistent; blades pinnately veined. Inflorescences spikes or panicles or of solitary flowers. Flowers bisexual, (4-)5-merous; receptacles campanulate; ovaries 1 per flower, superior, surrounded by a thin disk, 2-3 celled; styles entire or lobed. Fruits drupes with 2-3 seeds.
Sageretia is a genus of about 37 species, most of which are native to Asia but 1, Sageretia thea, reaching northeastern Africa, and 2 being native to the Americas.
