Plants usually annual, sometimes perennial. Inflorescences delicate, cylindrical spikes or spikelike racemes. Spikelets solitary, bases rounded or extended into an elongate callus; glumes subequal, lanceolate to narrowly lanceolate, membranous, exceeding the florets, long-awned; florets 1 fertile per spikelet; lemmas 1-veined, acute.
Perotis includes 16 species. They are all native to the Old World tropics. Four species are known from Somaliand and Somalia.
