Plants herbs, sometimes gynodiecious or dioecious. Inflorescences thyrselike, dense; bracts more or less leaf-like; cymes with 1-flowers; bracteoles short or longer than the calyces. Calyces 5-lobed, 16-ribbd; lobes subequal to slightly unequal. Corollas 2-lipped, upper lips straight, shallowly hooded ot flat, 2-lobed of emarginate, lower lips longer than the upper lips, 3-lobed, middle lobe larger, often concave and/or dentate; stamens directed towards the upper corolla lipsm the poster pair long, anther cells divaricate; style branches alomst equally long. Nutlets ellipsoid, scars with prominent areolas, tuberculate at least towards the top.
Nepeta is a genus of 250 species. They are native to India and temperate parts of the Old Worl. One species, Nepeta azurea, has been reported from Somaliland, none from Somalia.
