Plants shrubs or small trees, deciduous or evergree. Leaves opposite, simple, entire, glabrous. Inflorescences terminal, usually thyrsoid panicles. Flowers white or cream; calyces campanulate, shortly 4-toothed or truncate; corollas 4-lobed; stamens 2, attached to the tubes; anthers exserted or included. Fruits berry-like drupes, not winged, with 1-3 seeds.
Ligustrum includes 45-50 species and is ntaive to Europe, Asia, and Australia. Some species are cultivated throughout the world.
