Plantssgrubsor small trees, usually arme with spines terminatins short lateral twigs; prickles absent. Leaves bipinnate; rachises with glands at the insertion of the pinnae. Inflorescences axillary spikes, lower portion of spikes usually with wider, neutral flowers, upper portion with differently colored female flowers; calyces shortly 5-lobed; corollas 5-lobed, more or less united at their bases; stamens 10, free; anthers each with a deciduous gland; staminodes of neutral flowers elongate, without anthers. Pods contorted or straight, indehiscent or dehiscent.
Dichrostachys includes 16 species. It is native to the Old World tropics. Two species are known from Somalia, one of which, Dichrostachys cinerea, is also known from Somaliland. 1
