Plants usually perennial, rarely annual. Panicles open or contracted, bearing spikelets in groups of 2 or 3. Glumes glabrous; calluses square to narrowly oblong, sometimes 2-toother; lower lemmas 5-9-veined; upper lemmas usually with 2-8 tufts of hairs in transverse rows, sometimes glabrous, 2-lobed, awned from the sinus; awns geniculate, flat or terete, spirally twisted.
Danthoniopsis includes about 16 species and is native to Africa and Asia. It is now included in the tribe Tristachyideae of the subfamily Panicoideae, but it used to be in the Arundinelleae.
Onely one species of Danthoniopsis is known from Somaliland, Danthoniopsis barbata. It grows in both countries.
