M.G. Gilbert (1993) Clutia. Flora of Somalia 1: 179-280 Plants small tree, shrubs, or woody herbs, with simple hairs, usually dioecious. Leaves alternate; stipules small or absent. Inflorescences in axillary clusters. Male flowers: pedicels articulated; sepals 5, overlapping, inner surfaces with 2-7 glands at the base of each sepal; petals 5, overlapping; stamens 5, inserted on a column; discs of 5-many free glands; pistillodes present. Female flowers: pedicels not articulated; sepals and petals as in males but accrescent in fruit; disc-glands in 1 series at base of sepals; ovaries 3-celled; ovules solitary; styles bifid. Fruits spherical capsules; seeds ovoid, glossy black; caruncles present. The Flora of Somalia includes Clutia in the Euphorbiaceae the Angiosperm Phylogeny Group (APG IV) now accepts its inclusion in Peraceae. It is the only member of the family in Somaliland and Somalia where it is represented by 2 species. The Euphorbiaceae and Peraceae have many morphological similarities. Recent molecular work (Xi et al. 2012) shows them as sister families that diverged from other members of the Malpighiales. The tree shown in Xi et al. could also be used to support including the Peraceae as a subfamily in a larger Euphorbiacae. Key to the species and varieties of Clutia in Somaliland and Somalia.
