Plants trees or shrubs. Leaves petiolate, glabrous, with broadly cordate-ovate blades. Inflorescences racemes or panicles. Flowers unisexual or bisexual; sepals 5-6, united at the base; petals absent; androphore or androgynophore with 10-15 anthers irregularly clustered at the top; ovaries of 5 carpels, these free at maturity. Fruits stalked, woody follicles with numerous seeds enveloped by honeycomb-like compartments of endocarp.
Brachychiton is an Australian genus of about 35 species a few of which ae wildely cultivated as ornamentals or for fodder. One species, Brachychiton populneus, is cultivated in Somaliland.
