Plants shrubs or small trees. Leaves simple, conspicuously bilobed, occasionally divided almost to the base. Inflorescencess short racemes or solitary flowers. Flowers usually large and showy, bisexual; sepals more or less cohering after opening; petals 5; fertile stamens 1-10, sometimes accompanied by staminodes; filaments glabrous or hairy; styles elongate stigmas capitate or small. Pods oblong to linear, wusually woody, deshiscent; seeds few to many.
Bauhinia is a genus of about 200 species. It is pantropical in its distribution. There are 5 species in Somalia, 1 of which, Bauhina ellenbeckii, is known from Somaliland.
