Plants perennial; stems erect, up to 1 m tall, glabrous, striated. Leaves petiolate on lower portion of the stems, sessile higher up; blades up to 12 cm long, 7 cm wide, broadly lanceolate to oval or ovate, lower surfaces of lower blades hairy on the veins, upper blades with almost glabrous lower surfaces, margins dentate to serrate. Inflorescences racemose, of axillary flowers in the upper leaves. Flowers usually solitary; calyx teeth linear, about 1 cm long, with ciliate margins; corollas campanulae, 2-4 cm long, dark purple-blue, lobes acute; filaments wide at the base, hairy; styles included, with 3 linear stigmatic branches. Capsules about 1 cm long, dehiscing at the bases.
