Plants tufted perennials with knotty bases. Culms to 1 m tall; nodes densely bearded. Leaves evidently distichous; blades flat, stiff, pilose, with conspicuous white margins and sharply pointed tips. Panicles usually contracted, rarey open, the spikelets in triplets, usually flushed with purple. Lower glumes 5.5-7 mm long; upper glumes 8.5-10.5 mm long; lower lemmas 8.5-11 mm long; upper lemmas (including the callus and awn) 8-10.5 mm long, with tufts of hairs across the back; calluses 0.6-1.2 mm long, 2-toothed; awns 15-20 mm long, rigidly falcate.
Danthoiopsis barbata grows on rocky ledges, stony hillsides, andlava plant at 60-1600 m. It is known from regions N1-3 of the Flora of Somalia, as well as Ethiopia, Sudan and the southern portion of the Arabian peninsula.
