Plants rhizomatous and stoloniferous, forming low mats or, by accummulating sand, rounded mounds. Leaves inrolled, stiff, pungent, up to 3 cm long. Panicles 1.5-3 cm long, 0.8-2.5 cm wide. Spikelets with 5-7 florets, 7-9 mm long; lower glumes 2.7-3 mm long; upper glumes 3.2-3.6 mm long; lemmas 3.8-4.3 mm long.
Zaqiqah mucronata grows on coastal sands in Somaliland, extending north along the Red Sea coast to Eritrea and across the Gulf of Aden to similar habitats in Yemen. It is the only species of Zaqiqah. It used to be included in Odyssea as Odyssea mucronata.

Global distribution of Zaqiqah mucronata. There is some confusion at the time of writing (2022-05-23) because GBIF has some records under Zaqiqah, but many others under synonyms, including Odyssea mucronata. These show a range that includes West Africa.
